So, let's say that a consumer who has been feeling a little sad lately sees a commercial for the antidepressant drug Zoloft.

The United States is currently the only country in the world that allows drug companies to advertise prescription drugs directly to the consumer. And they seem to promise everything. Yet, according to a study conducted at the University of California and published in The Wall Street Journal, 60% of the pharmaceutical ads from medical journals violated FDA guidelines. As a result, the ads were vague and unfocused, primarily brand-awareness campaigns designed to smooth the way at the doctor's office.
Across Big Pharma, what companies do is fund and design studies which are carefully constructed in a way that will only highlight the positive effects of the drugs. That's a good question with a simple answer. Doctors may find this offensive, but detailing works.
What's about to follow in this essay is my own personal opinion and my own assessment of this bigger picture.
What may be even more important to note in all of this is the Vioxx cover-up further confirms the character of the drug companies in our modern day environment of drug promotion and suppression of negative side effects.
